I baraccamenti e le strade

Accesses in support of the front were, o n o ne si de, from Storo, a long Val d’Ampola via Tiarno and Bezzecca, or via Tremalzo Pass to Bocca Casèt, San Martino and Pur, on the other side, from Lake Garda. From Gargnano harbour men and equipment travelled up towards Gardola and Prabione, along the Tignalga valley to Polzone and Vesio. The road was later made suitable for heavy traffic as far as Voltino an d Limone. Another point of access was from Tremosine harbour, up the recently built Strada della Forra [Gorge Road], to Pieve and Vesio. Only later, after a link with the Fassinér turning had been built, d id the mooring piace in Campione take on a strategie role.
Relations were very difficult with the private firms commissioned by the Military Engineers to widen the mule track linking Malga Tremalzo and San Michele di Vesi o, to build cart roads from Passo Notato Tremalzo an d from Passo Notato Passo Guìl, via Leano and Prè and via Passo Rocchetta and Pregasina, and to reinforce the Vesio-Val di Bondo cart road and the Val di Bondo-Passo Nota mule-track. lmprovements were a Iso ma de to the mule-tracks between Bocca Fortini, Dòs del Trat and Pur, at Bocca Fortini to reach Monte Carene and descend to Cadrione, or at Legòs, leading from the bottom of Val di Bondo to Bocca Fobia, and from Limone to Passo Guìl.
The engine-driven mechanical cableway from the botto m of Val di Bondo to Val Cerése was completed in March 1916. Two other cableways, balanced by counterweights, were also built, one to Martinèl, to send ammunition from the 374th Battery’s emplacement down to the mule-track leading to Dòs del Trat, the other from the bottom of Val di Limone up to Bocca Fortini, to previde the batteries with water.
Military cableways were al so in operation from Tremosine harbour to Pieve, from Campione to L6, just below Pregasio, and from Lake Al Fil to the hairpin bend on the road from Oldesio to Gardola di Tignale. As ti me passed, numerous other cableways were built in the mountains.
After the troops and mule-trains, the first cannons started to arrive in the mountains. They were positioned at Roccolo Garibaldi, on Monte Corno di Nota, in Tremalzo and Casèt, and at Passo Rocchetta, beyond Passo Guìl. Text by D.F.
