The italian army on the Garda front


On 24th May 1915, Tremosine, together with limone on the border with Valle di Ledro, found itself involved in the war. Vesio was the most exposed village and quickly became an important centre for dearing the troops and armaments that had to reach and reinforce the forward positions.
The 1st Army, together with the III Army Corps, deployed the 5th and 6th Divisions. The 6th Division, in the Val Chiese sector, from Monte Listino to Lake Garda, consisted of the following:
– the Tuscany lnfantry Brigade (77th and 78th Regiments), on the right-hand side of the river Chiese, and the Sicily lnfantry Briga de (61st an d 62nd Regiments);
– the Vestone Alpine Troops Battalion, with the 53rd, 54th and 91st Companies. On 24th May it occupied the Punta del Cap – Tremalzo Pass – Monte Nota – Monte Carone li ne as it advanced toward Bocca dei Fortini and Guìl Pass; on 27th May, it set up at Bestana Pass, together with the 55th Company;
– the Val d’Intelvi Alpine Troops Battalion, which moved from Vesio to Edolo on 1st June;
– the Val Chiese Alpine Troops Battalion, which stayed in Vesio until 22nd May with the 253rd and 254th Companies and three mule trains. On 23th May, it moved to Bocca Fobia, to backup the Vestone Battalion, and on to Passo Nota and Passo Tremalzo. The 255th Company joined it in July.
– the 7th Bersagliere Regiment, with the 8th, 10th and 11th-bis Battalions, which moved from Liano, Costa di Gargnano, Gardola di Tignale and Passo Puria towards Valvestino on 24th May and occupied it without encountering any resistance;
– the 45th Bersagliere Battalion, which was in Condino on 3rd June and was ordered to evacuate the town two days later;
– the III Battalion of the Revenue Guard Corps, which, on 2nd June, moved from Pregasio di Tremosine to Malga Dalò in limone with the Slh Company and occupied Cima al Bai with the 10′” Company;
– the 16th Artillery Regiment, with seven batteries. Text by D.F.
