Tremosine sul Garda and its History


A prehistoric site was discovered in Pieve by Arturo Cozzaglio, at the top of the climb leading up from the harbour. Prehistoric artefacts were also unearthed in the Castello, Lis and Calvarice areas. Proof of a probable Etrusca n settlement is a plaque found in the beli tower of the church of Voltino and now kept in Brescia.
lt measures 40x40cm and bears a bilingual inscription, partly in Latin, partly in undecipherable characters. There are also several tombstones dating back to Roman ti m es, including one now walled into the shrine at the turning to Ustecchio; two mortuary urns containing 1st and 2″d century coins were found dose by.

Below are the milestones marking the history of Tremosine over the centuries after the year one thousand:
1287 – Brescia and Trent goto war over the possession of Tremosine.
1426 – Like the rest of the Garda shore, Tremosine comes under the domination of the Republic of Venice an d becomes part of the Gargnano “Quadrant”.
1797- The Treaty of CampoFormio brings an end to Venetian domination.
1807 – The Tignalga torrent bursts its banks and floods the centre of Campione, causing severe damage and loss of lite.
1815- The Congress ofVienna assigns Tremosine to the Kingdom of LombardyVeneto.
1859 – At the end of the Il War of independence, Tremosine comes under the Kingdom of Sardinia.
1861 – Tremosine becomes part of the Kingdom of ltaly, on the border with the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
1896 – Construction of the Feltrinelli cotton-mill commences in Campione.

The second half of the 19th century saw the start of emigration to America, especially to the city of North Adams, Massachusetts, USA.
1913- lnauguration, afteryears ofwork, ofthe Porto-Pieve-Vesio road linking the villages on the plateau with Lake Garda.
1915-The onset of World War l brings thousands of Italia n soldiers to Tremosine, mainly in Vesio and the mountains towards Valle di Ledro. Passo Nota becomes the headquarters of Subsector IV-bis Command, under the contro! of the l Army.
1931 – Opening of the Riva-Gargnano section of the Gardesana mai n road, thereby bringing Tremosine’s isolation to an end. Text by D. F.
